Nigeria’s new president, in his inauguration on May 29, 2023, announced the removal of subsidy on petrol despite Tinubu’s views from 2012. Tinubu criticized the removal of subsidy in an article, stating that it breaches the social contract with the people and will cause economic hardship. He believes that the decision is ill-timed and violates the condition precedent necessary before such a decision is made. Tinubu argues that the removal of subsidy is not about saving money, but rather about government’s ideas on the role of money in bettering the lives of people and about the primary objective of government’s interaction in the economy.
